Russia annexed Crimea in March 2014 and supported armed separatists in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region. Which may have been triggered by the 2014 Revolution of Dignity (Euromaidan) in Kyiv, which ousted Russian President Viktor Yanukovych after his rejection of a EU economic deal. Since 2014, the dispute has significantly escalated. To the point of the 2022 invasion by Russia. Since President Zelensky has stated that 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed in war with Russia. Whilst Sources like the BBC have confirmed the names of almost 160,000 people killed fighting on Russia's side in Ukraine.
This comes after the fall of the Soviet Union, Ukraine voted for independence.
Happened in Kyiv, which ousted Russian President Viktor Yanukovych after his rejection of a EU economic deal.
While NATO agreed in 2008 that Ukraine will become a member, the process was stalled by a policy of neutrality (2010–2014), re-accelerating only after the 2014 annexation of Crimea and accelerating further following the 2022 full-scale invasion.

Russia launches a full-scale invasion against Ukraine. Starting with Russian air strikes and a ground invasion were launched on a northern front from Belarus towards the capital Kyiv, a southern front from Crimea, and an eastern front from the Donbas and towards Kharkiv. The start of the largest and deadliest war in Europe since the world wars.
President Zelenskyy formally requested "accelerated accession" following Russia's annexation of additional Ukrainian territories. Candidate status was subsequently granted in June 2022, and official accession negotiations were opened in June 2024, marking a rapid progression from application to candidacy.
Russia officially recognized the "Donetsk People's Republic."
Russia announced the illegal annexation of the Donetsk region (along with others) after staging "referendums," which was followed by a massive escalation in military mobilization. In April 2022 Russia launches "Battle of Donbas" to capture the remainder of the region. As of August 2025, Russia controlled about 75% of the Donetsk oblast, with fierce fighting continuing for the remainder.

Russia, Ukraine, and the US negotiators met in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – an event of great significance, since that is the first meeting attended by all parties since Moscow's full-scale invasion. Whilst US and Russian negotiators seem to agree that a peace deal may not be very far away, and thus far have been productive and useful; Ukrainian negotiators state that it is too early to make any conclusions. The US proposal for Ukraine's industrial heartland in Donbas, in eastern Ukraine, is for a demilitarised and free economic zone in exchange for security guarantees for Kyiv. Zelensky stated last month that a 20-point US plan to end the war was 90% ready, with Donbas being one of the outstanding issues. He has offered to withdraw troops by up to 40km (25 miles) from the region to create an economic zone in Donbas, if Russia does the same.
Since the 2022 Russian invasion against Ukraine, thousands of casualties have been confirmed. Since the start of the invasion, questions have been arising as to when there would be a peace deal, if there is one and how it would work.
Currently, Russia continues to strike Ukrainian infrastructure and launch drones and missile attacks. While Ukraine tries to keep up with drone attacks too.
If the war is not ended by means of a peace deal or diplomatic relations it's likely there will be continued fighting and continued casualties.

Russia needs to stop invading, and give Crimea back to Ukraine. The Russians and Ukrainians are not the same, a peace deal needs to be reached to maintain each state's sovereignty.
Yes, but what about the potential territorial threat that Russia could face (military wise), if NATO actually accepts Ukraine?
